Abstract

In studies in India on the associations between arthropods and fungi causing the deterioration of stored cereals and pulses, larvae pupae and adults of 10 important stored products insects were screened to investigate the internal fungi associated with them. Internal fungi were isolated from 4-60% of the larvae, 6-83% of the pupae and 7-83% of the adults. Five of the many species isolated are listed as toxigenic. The dominant species of fungi were of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium. The toxigenic species A. flavus and A. candidus were present in all the insect species examined. It thus appears likely that insects may be actively involved in the spread of these fungi to previously healthy grain.
