Abstract
Swabbing of stems of coffee plants with 1% BHC insecticide solution to control the stem-borer has been found very effective in India. In view of its wide use on coffee estates, an investigation was made of the possibilities of contamination of coffee beans themselves, of the soil by inevitable drips, and of ponds and rivers (with a risk to drinking water) by leaching out in rain water. The following samples were taken from 5 coffee estates: bark scraped from plant stems, and coffee beans, 55; soil samples below plants at 5, 10, 15, 25 and 45 cm depth, 20; and water samples, 47. Residues of BHC were determined by a standard TLC method. Appreciable amounts (30-65 ppm) of BHC were absorbed on the bark, but none was translocated to the beans and there was no risk of its presence in the beverage. In spite of heavy rainfall residues in soil were small, amounting to 2-10 ppm at less than 5 cm depth, 3-4 ppm at 5-10 cm and nil at lower depths; this confirmed the known rapid degradation of BHC. The insecticide content of the water supplies ranged from 0.02 to 0.2 ppm and was higher than the levels considered acceptable in some cases; no residues were found in pond or river silt.
