Abstract
In tropical and sub-tropical countries, thermal gradient predisposes to moisture condensation in wetal structures. The internal infestation in grains also develops high microclimate relative hnmidity inside the kernel. Evidence has been obtained that the stored products insects could carry external and internal fungi. The degree of biodeterioration brought out by insects and moulds has been measured by a new reaction complex with the BENEDICT'S reagent. Similar changes also occur in underground stored grains. The microorganisms of toxigenic types have been encountered 011 samples drawn from the high moisture pockets. Techniques have been evolved for the preservation of wet harvested grains prior to storage and the control of bio-deterioration in the storage structures. The studies have shown that gaseous sterilisation with sporicidal fumigants. protective treatment with, such as, fungicides of low mammalian toxicity, organic acids, dithiocarbamate and sorptive minerals equilibrated with the sporicidal fumigants can be used as the curative measures. A dehydro-bin operating on the principles of moisture migration and the convection current have been designed for removal of condensed moisture with structures of high thermal conductivity, thus using the disadvantages of the tropical countries to the advantage of the preservation of grain quality in metal structures exposed to diurnal temperature changes.
